In Saskatoon, Saskatchewan's “Bridge City,” you can feel the pulse of the modern city, but you can also easily touch a sacred place that is home to more than 6,000 years of human activity - Wanuskewin Heritage Park. A place where the Northern Plains First Nations gathered, hunted and practiced ceremonies for generations, the park is rich in archaeological remains and cultural heritage. Here's a two-day itinerary that takes you deep into this “echo of the millennium” to experience the vibrancy of ancient culture combined with the urban charm of Saskatoon. This is a great trip for all seasons, but the outdoor experience is better in spring, summer and fall.
Day's Itinerary: Downtown Saskatoon → Wanuskewin Heritage Park → Return to Downtown Saskatoon for Hotel Check-in → Stroll along Meewasin Valley Trail → Dinner
In the morning, depart from downtown Saskatoon; a drive of approximately 15 to 20 minutes will easily bring you to Wanuskewin Heritage Park.
Upon arrival, be prepared to spend at least 4-5 hours exploring. First, visit the award-winning interpretive centre to learn about the lifestyles, cultural traditions, and deep connection to the land of Northern Plains Indigenous peoples over millennia through exquisite exhibits. Afterwards, hike along the park's well-maintained trail system. It's recommended to follow the trail along Opimihaw Creek or head to the Bison Viewing Platform for a chance to see the reintroduced North American bison herd up close. If time permits, actively participate in guided tours or cultural presentations offered by the park (such as traditional dances, storytelling, etc.), which will greatly enrich your experience. Lunch can be enjoyed at the park's unique restaurant, savoring dishes that blend traditional and modern flavors.
In the late afternoon, return to downtown Saskatoon and check into your hotel.
In the evening, take a leisurely stroll along the scenic Meewasin Valley Trail, admiring the charming views of the South Saskatchewan River and the magnificent sunset.
For dinner, choose a restaurant in downtown Saskatoon, or in the Broadway District, known for its independent boutiques and restaurants, or the vibrant Riversdale District.
Day's Itinerary: Remai Modern Art Gallery/Western Development Museum → Brunch → Stroll through Characterful Neighborhoods/Return Journey
In the morning, depending on your interests, choose to visit one of Saskatoon's cultural landmarks.
For modern art enthusiasts, head to the internationally renowned Remai Modern Art Gallery. The gallery houses an extensive collection of modern and contemporary art, with its collection of Picasso's linocut prints being a major highlight not to be missed.
For history buffs, opt for the Western Development Museum - 1910 Boomtown (Saskatoon branch). This museum realistically recreates a typical Saskatchewan town from the early 20th century, making you feel as if you've stepped back into that "boom era."
Around noon, enjoy a leisurely brunch in Saskatoon, experiencing the local dining culture.
In the afternoon, you can revisit Saskatoon's characterful neighborhoods, such as the previously mentioned Broadway or Riversdale districts, to buy some unique souvenirs or handicrafts. If you are local or on a tight schedule, you can also begin your return journey after this.
This "Echoes of Millennia" journey will take you from the ancient cultural deposits of Wanuskewin to the modern urban vitality of Saskatoon, offering a profound, informative, and enjoyable exploration of culture and nature.
